The tradition continues as MLG&CC hosts 120th MLA regatta

With 30km/h winds to pick up later this morning, it's looks like a great day for the Annual MLA Regatta, the oldest continuously run co-ed regatta in North America taking place at the Club today in its 120th year.  It's peak summer here now in Muskoka and we prep the golf course for one of our busiest weekends.  Despite the challenging spring conditions, the course's turf recovery is turning the corner now and we hope you enjoy the experience as you venture out to play a round or two this weekend.  We were lucky to miss another significant rainfall system that rolled through the area later yesterday with us only receiving 3mm of rain.  After 60mm this week already, we didn't need any more moisture!

EVENTS
The Annual MLA Regatta, the oldest continuously run co-ed regatta in North America, maintains a tradition of family, fun, and aquatic competition takes place today at the Club's waterfront. Despite years with steady or occasional downpours the regatta always has a great turn out. The regatta is a wonderful way for families to participate together in rowing, paddling, tilting, and swimming events. Even more family fun challenges are available including many three generation races, where three members of a family of a different generation get together in swimming teams or canoes to compete.

This Sunday, don't forget the MID-SUMMER MIXED golf event (8am/1pm shotguns) and the MIXED DOUBLES over on the tennis courts (9am)!

WEATHER CONDITIONS
Today Environment Canada is calling for a mix of sun and cloud with wind becoming northwest 30 km/h late this morning. High 22. UV index 7 or high.  Tonight will be clear with wind northwest 20 km/h becoming light late this evening. Low 11.

GOLF CART USAGE
A few soggy spots remain after this week's 60mm of rainfall.  Please keep carts on paths where possible and avoid any low lying areas and keep carts 'high and dry'.  Try and stay back from greensites by keeping carts outside of white lines.

PLAYING CONDITIONS
Greens
Greens will be starting to pick up speed again today as the course dries up after the recent rains.  Greens were cut and rolled today with speeds of approximately 9.5.
The low spot on the front of No. 5 green was sodded Wednesday.  This will fix the 'bird bath' at the front that caused winter damage from water not being able to drain off the front of the green.

Current optimum growing conditions helping No. 14 and 17 recover with bentgrass
Greens No. 14 and 17 are showing signs of recovery with the current optimum growing weather.  We will see some significant improvement in these greens over the next couple of weeks leading up to the Club Championship event.  The dimple-seeding from a couple weeks ago has germinated and young seedlings have started to emerge.  The dimpling from this week should pop by the middle of next week for added density to fill in the remaining voids.  We will repeat the dimple seeding process this coming week to further fill in the areas.  The sodded areas on greens will be lowered at regular intervals leading up to the Club Champs to closely match consistency of the other greens by then.
Tees, Fairways, and Approaches
These playing surfaces were all mowed yesterday for the weekend.  The tee divots continue to be maintained by our staff, and will continue over this busy weekend.  Please do your part in filling fairway and rough divots ONLY.
Rough
The rough mow crew caught up at the end of the week despite challenging wet conditions.  With some sunny skies now, we expect the turf will really start to grow, so the rough may be a little long by the start of next week.
Bunkers
Standing water in our poorly draining end of life bunkers was removed yesterday.  The playability of the bunkers will improve as the sand has a little time to dry.  The bunkers were fan raked for today's rounds.  We will be conducting a BUNKER SAND TRAIL later next week at the driving range.  The bunker left of the chipping green will be filled with three different sands to get your feedback on type of sand we should select for the future bunker renewal program.
Driving Range
The driving range finally opened for FULL USE this week after a treacherous wet spring.  The seed from last fall is starting to come up out on the range and will slowly change the bare soil from the prolonged flooded conditions to green over the next couple of weeks.  We will overseed the range this coming Wednesday (weather permitting) during it's regular closure time to help fill an any bare areas.
Ground Under Repair - Treat all new sodded areas IN ROUGH as 'ground under repair'.  The rough right of No. 4 fairway has been aerified and overseeded and roped off to allow recovery.
Course Etiquette - Please remember to repair ball marks and replace divots.  If carrying your golf bag and using the sand tubes, please use on FAIRWAYS and ROUGH ONLY.  Do not use sand tubes or bottles to fix tee divots!!!  It is different seed and it's the golf course maintenance staff responsibility to repair all tee divots on a periodic basis.  Using the sand and seed mix on tees will also deplete your available material for fixing fairway and rough divots prematurely!  Thanks for your cooperation!

UPCOMING TURF PRACTICES
  • Continuing overseeding on greens 14, 17, 3, 5, and 7 next week
  • Finish plugging No. 10 approach and other misc locations.
  • Overseed driving range (Wednesday August 7th during closure)
  • Prune trees behind No. 3 green to allow more air flow.
  • Thursday August 8th:
      • Greens verticut and topdressed
      • Fairway Primo Maxx + Triton (dollar spot) application

    Have a great round!
