Tightening The Turf

The approaches (yesterday) and tees (today) were verticut and topdressed with sand, to continue to maintain and increase firmness.  More firmness of the playing surface increases ball roll and bounce and golfers enjoyment of the game.  With the surge of growth over the last couple of weeks, this process is necessary as the surfaces have become a little puffy with the increased growth from the favourable growing weather.

The tees were then mowed after verticutting in a 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock direction to provide the sharpest cut.

Sand topdressing was applied after the mow and matted in to smooth and firm the surface.

The greens were verticut as well last week prior to topdressing to enhance a more vertical growth habit to provide a truer putting surface.

This cultural work should do well to help provide great conditions for the coming holiday Labour Day weekend and the two-day Men's Invitational the following week.
