Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for today and Friday with humidex reaching temperatures of 35-38 degrees in the Muskoka region and extend through most regions of southern Ontario. The heat episode will pass Friday night with the passage of a cold front.
During this time players (golf and tennis) need to exercise caution as heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Maintain adequate hydration, and wear loose fitting light coloured clothing to help battle the conditions.
Through this heat wave the turf is under tremendous stress as well. Carts need to be restricted away from heavy traffic areas to avoid turf loss. Please follow cart traffic signs, white lines and ropes.
Hot temperatures & wet soils is a recipe for turf decline. Overwatering is something to avoid during these conditions. Careful syringing to reduce turf canopy temperatures will be employed mid-day to prevent decline. Slower greens are better than dead greens. Therefore the putting surfaces will receive just a roll today (no mow), to relieve some avoidable stress until the weather breaks Friday night. Solid rollers will be used on the greens mowers for tomorrow's cut to minimize the pressure from wear and tear.
Thanks for your patience during this hot, dry period.
Stay hydrated and have a great round!
