US Open Fairway Mowers

It's fathers' day weekend which also means it's the US Open.  The picture above shows the mowing of fairways for the tournament.  If we had 12 mowers we would be able to mow fairways in one hour!

Today Environment Canada is calling for it to be sunny. High 25. UV index 9 or very high. Tonight will be clear. Low 8.

Golf carts ARE PERMITTED for use today.  It is the longest period this spring so far without rain.  Golf course has dried out nicely and is playing well with the drier, firmer conditions.

Greens have recovered well from recent aeration 10 days ago.  Extra sand placed on greens to fill in remaining holes is slowing ball roll down slightly.  Green speed is 9 feet and should increase as we get closer to the 14 day mark after aeration.

Brown areas on fairways have been aggessively verticut last week to help remove excessive thatch.    The existing weaker grasses in these areas are rooted in the thick thatch layer and require excessive water to survive.   The moisture level in the soils below are quite adequate to sustain healthy turf .  We are working hard as part of a long term approach to overseed and topdress these areas with Chewings fescue and bentgrass to establish new grass that is rooted in the soil not thatch.  This new grass will be more drought tolerate requiring less water and fertilizer to maintain going forward.  Please be patient as the areas may look a little browner then normal over the next couple of weeks as the new grass plants establish.

Have a great round and fathers' day weekend.
