Greens Getting Tune-up Leading In To Week of Club Championship

Greens verticutting completed this morning

This morning the scheduled greens verticutting and topdressing will be completed to minimize thatch and grain and to maintain firm and true putting surfaces.  The last time we did this process was July 8th, pretty much a month ago.  The greens will also be overseeded with bentgrass prior to topdressing to promote the increase in the bentgrass population to help ensure heat, drought and winter hardiness going forward in the future.

The timing of this process fits well with the upcoming Club Championships next weekend.  The week in between gives the greens a chance for the sand to settle into the turf canopy for optimal conditions for the competition.  You may find there are sand granules on your ball for the next few days, but the greens surfaces will be rolling fast and true as a result of the treatment.

Today some more sight-line pruning will be performed near No. 8 tee and No. 16 tee to help golfers better see traffic coming along the Ferndale road.  Two small pines left of No. 8 tee were removed to open up a window to view traffic and pedestrians coming along from the west.  Thankfully these two pine trees had health issues with one missing it's main leader and the other showing signs of needle decline which made the decision to remove them less difficult.  Three well spaced pines remain which were limbed up one whirl of branches for increased visibility.

Today the bunkers were all hand-raked using our new Accuform rakes to loosen up the compacted sand.

The weekly spray of the deer repellent Bobbex will be applied to all the gardens this morning, if you are wondering about the hint of garlic in the air.

Have a great round!
