Fully Sanded Surfaces Make Way For Excellent Labour Day Weekend Conditions

During the slight lapse in play over the last couple weeks, the greenstaff now has all the sand down on tees, fairways and approaches.  By the weekend, all this material should be settled in for some smooth, fast, firm and fun conditions for this end of summer holiday Labour Day weekend.

The fairways were completed last week on Thursday, so many of you have already experienced the extra distance on your drives created from the firmer and smoother surface.

Fairway topdressing completed last week
This week the tees were verticut and topdressed to remove excess leaf tissue causing "puffiness" or "sponginess" under your feet.  The verticut/topdress will provide firmer footing to allow you to have more balance over the ball on impact.

This morning, the approaches were verticut and topdressed, to again, remove "puffiness" and firm and smooth the surface.  You'll now more than ever want to use your putter when your up close to the green instead of an iron!

This time of year generally makes for some great golf conditions with the cooler nights and more moderated daytime temperatures.  The grass is happier and less stressed during these conditions and it shows in the performance of the turf.

Alternative Geese Control Methods

Some of you may have noticed the flash tape strung along the 16th, 17th and 18th shoreline between our green stakes.  Apparently the geese are scared of it, so we thought we'd give it a try thanks to advice from a member who's had success with it on their property.  Obviously it won't work for those birds that fly directly onto the property, but it seems to be a great deterrent from geese walking onto the course from the lake.

Efforts to Speed Up Play Continues

Believe it or not the Greens department can do a lot to limit the time it takes to play your round.  Therefore we've taken the initiative to put a lot of effort on maintenance that can affect speed of play and reduce the time it takes to find your ball and there by improve the overall enjoyment of the game.  Many of the tactics involve a lot of trimming along areas where errant shots may frequent.  You've probably already seen this work this year on the right side of No. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.  This week the greenstaff trimmed along the right side of No. 1, a definite hot spot for "mulligans" getting sliced off the first tee.

Have a great round!
