The last of the scheduled golf events are complete now after this past weekend's Mixed Member Guest and Lion's Tournament. The weather has been excellent for golf over the last week as the fall colours are coming into their peak form. The forecast this week looks like the mild conditions will continue all the way through Saturday with no frosty mornings predicted.
While the warmer weather is with us we are going to take advantage and complete some necessary cultural practices while the 'going is good'. This week the tees and fairways will be verticut starting with the tees today with this drizzly weather.
Organic matter content, also known as thatch, dramatically impacts golf course firmness and the way the golf course plays. Verticutting removes unwanted thatch within the upper turf surface.
The following article "Firm, Resilient Fairways Require a Commitment to Thatch Control" written by our consulting agronomist from the USGA, Adam Moeller, explains the process for thatch removal at how it improves playability and turf health on the golf course.
