Reaping The Rewards Of Continued Cultural Practices and Last Year's Bentgrass Overseeding Efforts

There has been a lot of hard work done by the crew behind the scenes to get the course to where it is now over the last few seasons.  Many necessary agronomic programs as recommended by the USGA have been implemented and continued which have raised the quality of turf.  The select removal of trees and soil modification through aerification, verticutting and drill & fill have had their positive effect.  Now with the momentum of the overwintering success this spring we have been able to take the course to a new and higher level then ever before.

2013 was a tough year with the winter damage.  We'd like to put behind us our trials and tribulations from last season.  However, it's worth noting we are now reaping the benefits of last season's aggressive bentgrass overseeding efforts.  Some of our worst greens last year that suffered ice damage, are now our best greens this year!  There is over 80% bentgrass now in greens 14 and 17!  These were unfortunate circumstances to go through at the time, but the saying "no pain, no gain" holds true here.  Many of the courses in southern Ontario that are struggling with ice damage challenges this season will also have more % bentgrass and greater chances of superb conditions in the seasons ahead as a result of their recovery efforts.

Drill and fill Operation: 3/4" drill bits down 10", then filled with dried sand

The drill and fill process that was completed late in the last two seasons has also benefited the greens by allowing them to drain better and root deeper.  The greens now require less water and as a result are firmer despite frequent rains.  The green speeds from green to green are now more consistent then ever before during wet conditions.

Very healthy and deep root structure shown in greens profile from drill and fill process

It's the end of July and the golf course and gardens are peaking right now for this mid-season time period. We're now at a time where we can set "cruise control" with some minor tuning and continue to deliver the exceptional conditions through the months of August and September for members and guests to enjoy.

Every year has its challenges.  With hard work, perseverance and teamwork, our maintenance department has made this one of the best years so far of the two decades as Superintendent at MLGCC!

Enjoy the remainder of the summer!
