Biweekly Greens Maintenance and Fairway Topdressing Targets Thatch Accumulation
Excessive organic matter (thatch) in turf can cause problems related to scalping, disease, water penetration and insect pests. With this cooler weather upon us we are going to take advantage of the opportunity to be a little more aggressive and remove some unwanted material using our Thatchaway verticut cassettes mounted in our Toro triplex greens mower.

No one likes golf shots that plug in the turf. From a playability standpoint, removing thatch makes the greens smoother, firmer and fast for added player enjoyment.
The greens will be topdressed following this operation to fill in the voids for added smoothness and firmness.
As mentioned in last Thursday's blog post, fairway topdressing will begin this morning through Thursday, avoiding tomorrow's Ladies' Day closing event at 1pm. Over 300 tons of sand will be broadcast over the fairway playing areas to dilute thatch, and smooth and firm the surfaces for added carry. There is minimal disruption of play during this process once the sand has been brushed in. The goal is to deliver 1000 tons of sand over the fairways each season! This 'sand capping' not only provides increased playability, but also more guaranteed cart access on fairways during increment, wet weather.
We appreciate your patience during these important surface management processes as they are among the most significant contributors to optimum playing conditions - fast, firm and fun.
Have a great round!
