Brooke Wins Again!

Canadian Brooke Henderson, 17, amateur who just turned pro this season has once again won the Canadian Women's PGA Championship this year held at the historic recently renovated Burlington Golf & Country Club.  She shot a final round 65 and -9 for the tournament to capture the win.

As part of my role as Ontario Director of the Canadian Golf Superintendent's Association (CGSA), I had the honour of being a spectator following the final group at Burlington G&CC yesterday, and to recognize Superintendent Dean Baker, CGCS, and his team for providing the fine conditions for the two day PGA event.

Dean and I were classmates at the University of Guelph, graduating from the class of 85A.  It's always good to catch up with Dean, and this time get a behind the scenes tour of what he has been up to the last year or so with the major renovations to his golf course. We also spoke about our class of '85 30th reunion plans later this fall, to meet up in Montreal at fellow classmate John Scott's course, Superintendent at Summerlea G&CC.

Burlington G&CC is another classic Stanley Thompson gem which opened in 1923.  The Club, working with Doug Carrick has redesigned and rebuilt all their bunkers to the Stanley Thompson styling, and resurfaced (resodded) all their greens to bentgrass.  The old dusty gravel cartpaths were also paved with asphalt and stone curbing added along tee surrounds for a clean, tidy appearance.

The Club is now rejuvenated and you can tell the members are happy and proud of their updated classic course. The golf course now looks and plays fantastic.  A beautiful, new, multi-function clubhouse was also recently completed to round off the entire facility.
