Greens needle tyne venting part of tomorrow's scheduled maintenance
Last week again saw a hot week with three consecutive days above 30 degrees with high humidity contributing to significant stress on the turf. The crew was careful to 'baby' the turf through this stressful period by carefully monitoring moisture levels as well as minimizing physical injury on the grass by using solid rollers on the mowers.
With a break finally in the weather with some cooler temperatures early this week we have scheduled some overdue greens maintenance for the morning of Tuesday July 19th. The majority of the work should be completed before play but may carry over into some of the earlier groups playing the course in the morning.
The work will involve the following maintenance to help tune up the playing surfaces to be firmer, faster and smoother for the balance of the July:
- Greens verticutting to standup grass laying over to help provide a truer, smoother surface.
Light verticutting prior to venting
- Select areas on greens 2, 10, 11, 12, 15 will receive some bentgrass overseeding in areas to promote bentgrass where there is some poa annua struggling after this heat wave.
- Greens will be vented with needle tynes to help relieve compaction, allow air and water penetration into the rootzone.
Tiny venting holes prior to be filled by topdressing
- Greens will be lightly topdressed to smooth out the surface.
Thank you for your patience while these important processes are carried out tomorrow morning. You should notice an appreciable difference in the greens performance after the operation is completed.
