The heat wave has left us since Friday's thunderstorms roamed through the area dropping 15mm of rainfall. The temperatures over the weekend were more moderate with highs of in the mid 20's and lows the last couple nights down to 12, for a much needed breath of fresh air for the struggling turf. The cooler weather is supposed to remain with us over the next 14 days for some perfect golfing and growing weather! Today is supposed to be a mix of sun and cloud with a high of 27.
EVENTS
Today the course is being prepared for this afternoon's Men's Day event starting with a shotgun at 1:30pm . This morning there is an 8am shotgun as well for member play.
GOLF CART USAGE
Golf carts are available today for FULL USE. With the extreme heat and peak season play please be conscious of stress on turf caused by concentrated traffic. Scatter carts to avoid excessive wear. Please use cart paths where provided. Keeping carts on paths on par 3's is a good practice.
COURSE CONDITIONS
Bentgrass seedlings emerging on No. 14 green this morning! |
Some debris from branches etc. from Friday's storm still lingers as some cleanup around the course is still necessary.
Greens - Greens were cut and rolled today. Green speeds are 10 feet this morning and up to 10.5 by this afternoon.
Today, the remaining of the worst parts of the recovering area on No. 17 green will be hand-dimpled and overseeded with bentgrass to fill in areas where Poa is struggling from heat stress and last month's Velocity knockback. The dimple areas are now coming up from last Tuesday's dimple seeding on No. 14 green. With moderate temperatures expected over the next couple of weeks, we should see some significant rebound from of No. 14 and 17 greens from the new bentgrass seedlings emerging.
Tomorrow the greens will be verticut, vented and topdressed. Some thin areas will be overseeded with bentgrass to take advantage of germination potential in small holes created.
Tees - Will be mowed Tuesday morning
Fairways - Were mowed today in a right to left direction diagonal direction to better mow grass laying over. The traditional mow pattern typically done lays over the grass, so period change of direction helps tighten up the turf.
Rough - The rough mowers will focus back on green surrounds again after the weekend.
Bunkers - All greenside bunkers were fan raked this morning. All fairway bunkers were raked with the Sand Pro mechanical rake.
Ground Under Repair - Treat all new sodded areas IN ROUGH as 'ground under repair'. No. 18 fairway has been overseeded to recover ice damage. Treat any bare areas on No. 18 as 'ground under repair'.
Course Etiquette - Please remember to repair ball marks and replace divots. If carrying your golf bag and using the sand tubes, please use on FAIRWAYS ONLY. Do not use sand tubes or bottles to fix tee divots!!! It's the golf course maintenance staff responsibility to repair all tee divots on a periodic basis. Using the sand and seed mix on tees will deplete your available material for fixing fairway divots prematurely! We also use a different seed on the tees for shadier conditions and quicker germination.
Driving Range - Friday, a hydrovac truck arrived to flush out the basins and remove debris in the pump chamber at the driving range and basins and tennis area. The pumps had to be removed and reinstalled to complete this process.
The Driving Range remains open for PARTIAL USE ONLY. We ask that you hit only from the stations that are set up, and only at the flagsticks set up (yardages are indicated on the permanent marker). The range will be closed during certain times to hand pick as needed, and for Junior Clinics. Thank you for your understanding during this wet season with high lake levels. It's been a battle! With the drier weather the water levels are dropping and ditches are getting lower allowing us to get ahead of the standing water.
